Canon John Connolly, who was a priest in the Diocese of Dunkeld for almost 60 years, has died at the age of 87.
Canon Jock, as he was known, was born in Limerick in 1923.
He wanted to be a priest from a young age and studied for the priesthood at St Kieran’s College, Kilkenny.
He was ordained priest in St Mary’s Cathedral, Kilkenny, in 1952 and invited to serve the Diocese of Dunkeld by Bishop James Donald Scanlan.
His first appointment was as curate in St Andrew’s Cathedral, Dundee, and he also served in St Joseph’s, Dundee, and Our Lady of Lourdes, Perth.
He was appointed parish priest of St Fillan’s, Newport, in 1962, serving in north-east Fife for three years before being appointed to the parish of St Leonard’s in Dundee 1965.
He spent 16 years in the Ardler parish before being appointed parish priest of St Clement’s by Bishop Vincent Logan in 1981.
After 12 years in St Clement’s he moved to St Teresa’s in Graham Street, from where he retired in 2004.
Canon Jock is survived by one sister, who lives in Ireland.
The Requiem Mass for Canon Jock will take place in St Clement’s, Dundee, on Tuesday.
