David Nicoll, a Bevin Boy who was a leading figure in the Arbroath community, has died at the age of 86 following a short illness.
Born in Edinburgh, Mr Nicoll was brought up in Arbroath and attended Inverbrothock Primary School and Arbroath High School.
He was an apprentice with Keith and Blackman engineers before war broke out and he was conscripted to work in the mines as one of the Bevin Boys.
When war ended he resumed his work as an engineer and inspector in a few factories.
He then joined Dundee Corporation as a work study engineer eventually retiring 21 years ago with the title of assistant director of manpower studies for Tayside.
On retiring Mr Nicoll and his wife Cathie enjoyed life together until her death 10 years ago. They had been married for 52 years.
Mr Nicoll held the post of treasurer at St John’s Methodist Church in Arbroath for 60 years until illness forced his retiral.
For many years he was a youth club leader in Dundee and Arbroath.
Mr Nicoll was the Scottish representative for the Bevin Boys Association and received his badge and certificate from Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
He also had 21 years of service with the 28th Angus Scouts (3rd Arbroath), with 17 of those years as treasurer.
Mr Nicoll was a past member of the children’s panel and was an avid supporter and season ticket holder for Arbroath Football Club.
He was also a past secretary, treasurer and chairman of Arbroath Probus Club, past secretary of the Recorded Music Club and property convener of the Methodist Home for the Aged (Gowan Park).
He is survived by Colin, Stephen, David and daughter-in-laws Effie and Alison, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
