Former Dundee city architect Gordon Mechan

Retired Dundee architect Gordon Mechan has died suddenly at his home in Broughty Ferry, aged 83.

Born in Richmond, Surrey, he began his schooling in Acton. Following evacuation to Shiplake in 1940 the school closed and six weeks into the London Blitz he moved to Dundee, where he attended the High School of Dundee until 1945.

Apprenticed to Thoms & Wilkie from 1945-7, he studied architecture at Dundee College of Art, graduating with a diploma in architecture in 1950.

This was followed by two years of National Service in the RAF.

In 1953 he joined Dundee City architect’s department, rising to become depute city architect in 1963. Six years later he was invited to take up a post at Bett Brothers. He stayed with the firm, retiring in 1993.

He was active in various societies, including the Abertay Historical Society and Dundee Civic Trust.

Mr Mechan leaves his wife of 51 years Sheila, children Dallas, Maurice, Dolina and Mark, grandchildren Charlie, Lily, Elliot, Euan, Robyn, Max and William and step-grandchildren Caitlin and Lindsay.
