Former chemist and community councillor Walter Passway

A former Angus chemist and community councillor has died at home, aged 82.

Walter Passway was born in Glasgow in 1930 and gained a BSc (Hons) in chemistry at Strathclyde University before moving to Montrose.

He moved to the town to work as an industrial chemist at GlaxoSmithKline in 1956, and in 1957 he married Laura in Millport, Isle of Cumbrae.

This was where they met and returned annually with their families.

Mr Passway was a keen bridge player and was president and tournament director for Montrose Bridge Club for many years.

He was also a member of Montrose Community Council for some years and a member of Montrose Academy PTA.

Mr Passway was devoted to his family and took great delight in his six grandsons and three granddaughters.

He retired in 1992 and enjoyed tending his large garden, exploring Angus, and going on holiday abroad with Mrs Passway.

The couple recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary.

Mr Passway is survived by his wife Laura, children Dorothy, Michael, Alison and Norman and his nine grandchildren.
