Bill Smith, the former managing director of one of Dundee’s oldest family firms, has died after a short illness, aged 82.
Mr Smith was the third generation of his family to work in furnishers and drapers Smith & Horner Ltd, which had been founded by his grandfather in 1889.
Born and raised in the Broughty Ferry and Barnhill areas of Dundee, Mr Smith was educated at Grove Academy and Dundee High, before serving as an army pilot in India.
He continued to serve in the Territorial Army in 1965, rising to the rank of major.
Mr Smith married the late Gwen in 1952, and worked with the family business which had shops in Broughty Ferry, Hilltown and Peter Street until he retired as managing director in 1992.
He was a founder member of Claverhouse Rotary Club. Mr Smith was also a member of Panmure Golf Club and the Caledonia and Dalhousie clubs at Carnoustie, and also enjoyed travel, ornithology and gardening.
He is survived by sons Iain and Douglas and four grandchildren.
