Sudden death of Mr Bryan Bathie

Sudden death of Mr Bryan Bathie

Family, friends and former colleagues have been shocked by the sudden death of Bryan Bathie, a former Tayside Region deputy director of education. He was 66.

Dundee-born and bred, Mr Bathie was educated at Stobswell Boys School and Dundee College of Education and became a teacher of technical subjects.

From 1968 to 1972 he worked as a VSO (Voluntary Service Overseas) teacher in Uganda and then Kenya.

Returning to Dundee, he worked for a year at the NCR Golf Club in Monifieth, then took up a post at Kirkton High School and later at Morgan Academy.

He became strongly involved with the Tayside initiative TVEI (Technical and Vocational Educational Institute) and in 1990, on secondment, became the region’s deputy director of education, before returning to TVEI as project co-ordinator.

After the 1996 local government reorganisation he moved to Angus Council as education project co-ordinator, particularly for ICT. He retired in 2008.

An intensely practical man with a deep interest in computers, he was appreciated by friends and colleagues alike for his cheery helpfulness and great sense of humour.

In retirement he pursued many interests, particularly travel, and he and his long-term partner, Lindsey Grieve, had returned from a trip to Paris and France’s war cemeteries just days before he died.

Mr Bathie, who lived in Broughty Ferry, is survived by his two sons, Simon, who lives in Glenrothes, and Lincoln, who lives in North Dakota, as well as three grandsons and a granddaughter.

His funeral is at Dundee Crematorium at 1.15pm on Wednesday.
