Gilbert Ritchie, a former rector of Grove Academy in Broughty Ferry, has died at the age of 90.
The son of a rector, he was born in Glasgow and educated at Forres Academy and Ayr Academy while his father was in charge of the schools.
After leaving, he was in business for a year before joining the Royal Artillery at the outbreak of the second world war.
After the war, he studied at St Andrews University where he met his wife Paula and at the teacher training college in Dundee.
His first post was as a teacher of English and history at Hawick High School and he then became principal teacher in the subjects at Preston Lodge in East Lothian.
In 1963 he moved to Perth Academy as principal teacher of English and seven years later he was appointed rector of Grove Academy. He retired in 1981.
A member of St Aidan’s Church in Broughty Ferry, he was also a member of Abertay Rotary Club, chairman of Broughty YMCA and a director of Dundee Rep.
In addition to his wife, Mr Ritchie is survived by two sons, two daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
