We’ll never know, of course, but had the Stuart Armstrong and Gary Mackay-Steven deals been completed a day earlier, would there have been a big name signing at Tannadice?
United could have contested Aberdeen for Kenny McLean, had more time to pursue his team-mate John McGinn, or maybe even make an audacious attempt to lure Greg Stewart to the other side of the street.
The player I would have gone after would have been Stevie May.
He wasn’t exactly loved by the United fans when he was at Saints but that was because he scored goals against them. A lot of them.
And he’s the type of perpetual-motion striker they could do with.
May was benched by Sheffield Wednesday boss Stuart Gray the weekend before the window shut, and if a £500,000 offer had come in he may have been tempted to let him go.
Hopefully May will enjoy a better second half of the season in Yorkshire, but if he doesn’t, United should be at the front of the queue to bring the hair and tattoos back north.
