Charlie Telfer didn’t ask for the transfer fee for his switch from Rangers to Dundee United to go to a tribunal.
He didn’t ask for the controversy surrounding it.
And he certainly didn’t ask for a £200,000 price tag to be put on his head.
Amid all the claims and counter claims, spare a thought for the 19-year-old, because from this day onward the pressure on him to perform has rocketed.
Ryan Gauld, Stuart Armstrong and the many talented youngsters who have come through the ranks have been given the opportunity by fans and the media to take their time to develop.
And even the likes of Andy Robertson and Aidan Connolly, who have arrived at Tannadice for buttons were, and are, cut some slack because of their age.
There aren’t many teenagers in Scottish football who command a £200,000 fee though. So, rightly or wrongly, Telfer will have to back that up.
We’ve seen signs so far that he can, but that’s all they have been. Signs.
Telfer will not get the opportunity of progressing under the radar that others of his age at United are, and he’ll need broader shoulders because of that.
