Football is the cruellest of mistresses.
Just a few months ago, Coming Up’s heart was gladdened by scenes like these on the streets of Perth after St Johnstone carried home the Scottish Cup for the first time in their history.
Could they defend their trophy? No. They were pumped by Queen of the South.
Never mind, near-neighbours and bitter rivals Dundee could step into the breach to lift the famous old trophy in May.
What’s that? Papped out by sleep-deprived Celtic? Bah!
Maybe our lower league Courier Country teams will step up to the mark then. Brechin had a fair chance against Falkirk and on-song Arbroath only needed to get by perennial cup bottlers Hibs for a quarter final place.
No? Neither of them?
OK, so Raith beat Rangers but was the soccer equivalent of seal clubbing. It hardly counts.
So despite Dundee United cruising through as well, it’s fair to say it’s not been a vintage weekend for our local sides.
Monday’s Courier has all you could want and more on the sporting weekend including our hard-hitting rugby ace Steve Scott on Scotland’s Six Nations opener (which we lost. Obvs.)
It also has a spot of news, including a remarkable story about a vase valued at around £25 which sold at auction for 100,000 times that amount.
We learn about an objection from beyond the grave to a wind turbine application and hear from a prominent MP why “heads must” roll over the V&A funding secrecy debacle.
We also have the latest exclusive column from Alex Salmond who tells us what he thinks of Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott (not much, apparently) and recent sightings of Big Foot, which gives us the chance to point you towards this blog again.
It’s all in Monday’s Courier. What a way to start the week.
