Labour splinter group hears independence would free members to ‘regain the heart of our party’

An independent Scotland is the ”key” to Labour regaining its traditional values, according to a splinter group within the party.

Angus-based Allan Grogan, founder of Labour for Independence, said breaking up the UK was the right choice for Scots at the movement’s inaugural conference in Glasgow on Monday.

Dundee-born musician and broadcaster Ricky Ross also spoke about his personal journey to independence, while Dr John MacDonald, lecturer in politics and international development at Dundee University, outlined some of the foreign affairs options for an independent Scotland at the event.

Mr Grogan said: ”Let tonight begin the fight back to regain the heart of our party, putting the people of Scotland, their ideals and needs first in an independent, free, and just Scotland.”

Ex-Labour MP Dennis Canavan was also a speaker.
