With there being no Green candidate standing in Perth and North Perthshire, Labour candidate Jamie Glackin has made his pitch to step into the breach.
He was backed by Scottish secretary Jim Murphy as he outlined his environmentally-friendly credentials.
Mr Murphy said, “With the Climate Change Bill, the UK is the first country in the world to legislate on legally binding targets.
“I know that Jamie is a specialist in the renewable energy industry and know that his knowledge and experience can serve him well as member of parliament for Perth and North Perthshire.”
Mr Glackin said, “The Labour party has shown in government that we take issues relating to climate change and security of energy supply very seriously indeed.
“It’s Labour who have introduced a draft of measures to prevent our lights going out, eliminating fuel poverty and combating climate change.
“One of our key policies is investment in green jobs and I want to see Perth and North Perthshire at the top table when it comes to that investment.”
Mr Glackin said that Perthshire is a centre for hydro and wind energy and believes it can be the hub for microgeneration and biomass heating.
He said, “The fact is that most people in the Conservative Party don’t believe that climate change is real and offer no alternative strategy to fossil fuels.
“The SNP are between a rock and a hard place. They like to shout about their low-carbon |credentials, but then get themselves in a twist over nuclear power generation.”
He added, “There is much more at stake in this election than just the future government.
“Only Labour have provided the answers to these important questions. It’s substance over spin from the other parties.”
