The Electoral Commission has cleared the SNP in Angus of any breach of the Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act 2000 (PPERA) after an examination of their accounts.
Angus Conservative Association had lodged a complaint with the electoral watchdog regarding the turnover of the accounting units operated by the SNP in the region.
However, the commission on Monday thanked the SNP for its co-operation and made it clear that there was no case to answer.
In a letter to the SNP the commission said, “We have been provided with, and have carefully considered, statements of accounts or income and expenditure figures for the registered accounting units in the Angus area for the last three years, along with supporting information concerning the financing of offices, staff and leaflet printing,
“We are satisfied, based on the evidence before us, that Angus SNP have not breached PPERA (the Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act 2000).
“To clarify, we are satisfied that Angus SNP does not have an income or expenditure exceeding £25,000. For clarity, none of the information provided led us to consider there was any basis to extend the scope of our review.”
The commission made it clear that it now considers the matter closed.
Angus SNP candidate Mike Weir said the letter was a “clear and unequivocal” rejection of the complaint, what he described as a “politically motivated slur against the SNP.”
