An impressive victory for Pete Wishart in Perth and North Perthshire brought some cheer on what was a very disappointing night for the SNP.
The Nationalists fought off the Conservative challenge by retaining the seat with a much increased majority.
In 2005 they beat the Tories by 1521, but this time around the gap was nearly three times as much 4379.
It was a bigger win than even successful candidate Pete Wishart could dream of and completed a hat-trick of General Election victories for him.
He said, “This is a fantastic result.
“There has been a lot of talk about this constituency and we were supposed to be washed away on a Tory wave.
“Well, we were not. This is not a Tory seat it is an SNP heartland.
“I stood as a local champion and I will continue to represent all the people of Perth and North Perthshire without fear or favour.”
The constituency was a top Tory target in Scotland and before the campaign started it was expected that it would be a close-run thing between the two parties.
Big hitters like Ken Clarke and William Hague were dispatched north early on but Peter Lyburn’s campaign was dogged by controversy thereafter, particularly when he sent an open letter to the press supposedly signed by members of the local business community but without their consent.
Reflecting on his comprehensive defeat, Mr Lyburn said, “I’m extremely proud of the campaign we fought and we will be back next time.”
