Fife will find ‘appropriate’ way of honouring Gordon Brown

Fife is to pursue plans to bestow an “appropriate” honour on former Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
Councillors meeting at Fife House paid tribute to the Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath MP on Thursday, a day after The Courier revealed that a formal request had been made to give Mr Brown the Freedom of Fife.
The initial call came perhaps somewhat surprisingly from SNP MSP Tricia Marwick, who said Mr Brown had brought “honour and distinction” to the kingdom having become the only Fifer to hold Britain’s top political job.
Councillors briefly discussed the issue and, while it was widely recognised that Mr Brown should be given some sort of recognition, it is not yet clear if the Freedom of Fife will fit the bill.
Provost Frances Melville said a formal request had been received, but the council has a protocol to take the issue forward.
She will write to Mr Brown to thank him for his “immense contribution” to public service.
