All of Scotland’s Labour councillors should consider resigning in protest against the financial meltdown facing local authorities, it has been suggested.
John Morton, from the Mid Fife and Glenrothes Constituency Labour Party, said if the cash squeeze for councils does not improve in the next year a mass resignation “might be seriously worth considering”.
“If things don’t change significantly during the course of this year, it might be seriously worth considering the resignation of every Labour councillor in Scotland, with no Labour candidate standing in any on the ensuing by-elections. It really is that bad, that pointless, unless there’s a change in outlook at Holyrood,” he added.
Deputy First Minister John Swinney wrote in The Courier this week that a 2% cut in council budgets is challenging but necessary in the face of UK Government austerity.
He added £250 million for health and socal care integration would help local authority budgets.
