Holyrood’s Presiding Officer is to undergo surgery this week.
Tricia Marwick went for tests after suffering pain in recent months.
A spokesman for the Scottish Parliament said: “Recent medical tests confirmed the need for an operation to remove an obstruction in her bowel.
“Doctors have advised this to be the cause of significant pain and discomfort that has been affecting Mrs Marwick over the last few months.
“The Presiding Officer is not expected to return to the Parliament before the summer recess but will work from home on parliamentary business following a period of recuperation after the operation.
“Her duties within the Parliament will be carried out by the Deputy Presiding Officers John Scott MSP and Elaine Smith MSP.”
Earlier this year, Mrs Marwick had a minor operation to remove her gallbladder.
