Gavin Rae’s fine form catching attention of SPL clubs

Dundee midfielder Gavin Rae is understood to be a target for both Aberdeen and Hibs.

The 34-year-old former Scotland and Rangers man returned to Dens Park towards the end of last year after leaving Cardiff City. He has impressed for the Dark Blues in the centre of the park and the Dons and Hibees have taken note.

Rae extended his Dundee deal in early January but has a gentleman’s agreement with the club to move on if an offer of a contract elsewhere comes in.

Meanwhile, Dens boss Barry Smith has admitted his team’s enforced lay-off will be both a blessing and a curse.

The First Division promotion hopefuls have the next two Saturdays off and Smith is grateful that a number of players carrying minor injuries will get the rest and recuperation needed.

However, he is also mindful of the fact that he doesn’t want the club’s impressive recent form to be jeopardised.

A couple of closed-doors games will be played before they get return to competitive action against Hamilton Accies on February 11, and Smith is hopeful that will be enough to keep them ticking over.

He said: ”We’ll play a game on Friday and we’ve got a another bounce game against Dunfermline the following Friday. Anybody that’s not been playing will benefit from getting a match, but I also think it’s important that we continue playing to keep the momentum that we’ve got. It’s important that come February 11 we’re ready to go again.

”In terms of the injury situation not playing for three weeks is not a bad thing. We’ve got three or four boys with niggles who have been playing week in and week out. Getting them back to full fitness will be a bonus.

”But the team’s been doing well so in that regard you want to keep going. Hopefully we’ll be able to keep it going when we eventually come back.”
