Dundee United fans flocked to Tannadice in their thousands yesterday to snap up nearly half of the club’s 20,000 ticket allocation for the Scottish Cup final.
The club estimate around 10,000 briefs were bagged in the first 24 hours of sale, with season ticket holders, Arab Zone members and supporters who play the lottery given priority to secure their seats.
Some queued outside the club shop for more than two hours to ensure they had their pass for Hampden on May 15, when the Tangerines take on Ross County.
United’s director of communications Derek Robertson reassured followers who have yet to buy tickets that there will be plenty to go around when public sale starts tomorrow.
He said, “We have had an unbelievable response all day and there were huge queues outside the club shop from early this morning lasting all day long.
“We would encourage as many people as possible to now use the phone lines to purchase their tickets as the system is quicker and easier and people can get right through.
“The only problem is when people want to sit in a specific section and they simply can’t be accommodated due to the high demand.”
He added, “We are very confident that we will be taking over 20,000 fans to Hampden.”
Donna Forrest (49), a nurse from Lawside, queued for nearly two hours before she reached the ticket counter. She said, “I wouldn’t miss the final for the world. It’s a well deserved end to a great season.
“I’m picking up 15 family tickets and looking forward to a wonderful final I think we are looking at a 3-2 victory for United.”
Ann Angus (60), a retired care assistant from Broughty Ferry, said, “I’ve been to a dozen cup finals and came home in tears every time, bar one. It’s our cup and that’s why we’re all here queuing up.”
