St Johnstone lost a little over £60,000 on their return to the SPL. Saints’ accounts to May which cover the period in which they celebrated their 125th anniversary showed a pre-tax loss of £63,367.
The season in question saw the Perth club finish eighth in the league and reach the semi-finals of the Co-operative Insurance Cup.
In his report to shareholders, which accompanies the accounts, chairman Geoff Brown warns it is unlikely that general income will improve in the near future.
Brown indicates the loss was down to a combination of a decrease in turnover, significantly increased investment in the football operation, having to upgrade the floodlight system at McDiarmid Park and other ground maintenance costs.
He does, however, express optimism over St Johnstone’s ongoing prospects.
“I remain positive regarding the immediate future of the club and manager Derek Mclnnes has again been provided with significant funding to strengthen his playing squad for the season ahead,” he says.
“I am under no illusions as to the challenges which will face the club next season, particularly from within the Scottish Premier League, but I remain optimistic for the forthcoming season.
“Hopefully, I shall be reporting on a positive season 12 months hence.”
