Stephen Simmons a doubt for Raith Rovers

First Division table-toppers Raith Rovers may be without influential midfielder Stephen Simmons for Saturday’s league game against Morton.

The former Hearts player had to hobble off towards the end of last weekend’s victory over Ross County and he now faces a race against time to be fit to travel to Greenock.

“Stephen Simmons, Allan Walker and Iain Williamson did not train on Monday,” said Rovers manager John McGlynn.

“Simmons is definitely the worst. He has a dead calf and it is still very painful. It will not be until Thursday at the earliest before he can train and only if there is a big improvement.

“If he does not train then, it may well be that he will need a last-minute fitness test on Saturday, but it is a bit early to say. Walker picked up a knock on the top of his foot, while Williamson has a calf injury, but they should both be fine for the weekend.”

The win against County saw Rovers leapfrog fellow Fifers Dunfermline to the top of the league table.

However, only 1776 fans turned out to witness the victory a low turn-out which McGlynn declared “disappointing.”

“It is the first time we have gone under the 2000 mark,” he said. “Last Wednesday the prime minister announced the big financial cutbacks so, perhaps people are already drawing the purse strings in and need every penny they can get.

“On the football park, we cannot really do an awful lot more than be at the top of the table. We do appreciate that there are hard times out there but the attendance was disappointing.

“We can only hope that the fans turn out in numbers for the next home game against Queen of the South and then the match after that with Dundee. After all, we have had a difficult couple of months with not too many home games.”

Meanwhile, McGlynn revealed that he has decided to contest a two-match touchline ban.

The manager was sent to the stands by referee Andrew Dallas during a reserve match with East Fife earlier this month.

“I have appealed against the ban and I am waiting to find out when I need to go to a personal hearing,” he said.

McGlynn also admitted that he has yet to make a decision on extending Christian Nanetti’s contract.

The former Queens Park Rangers player’s month-long deal ends soon but McGlynn is still weighing up whether to keep him.
