Former Par Neil McGregor poised to sign for Dundee FC

Dundee boss Barry Smith is set to sign former Dunfermline defender Neil McGregor.

The big centre-half, who was released by Pars boss Jim McIntyre at the end of last season, has impressed while playing as a trialist for Dundee in games against St Johnstone and Southend, and has done enough to persuade Smith to offer him a deal.

The Dens Park boss has been looking to bolster his squad ahead of the new campaign and he is delighted that McGregor looks likely to put pen to paper within the next 24 hours.

“We have been speaking to Neil and hope to get a deal finalised soon,” said Smith.

Meanwhile, Dundee midfielder Ross Chisholm could be available for Saturday’s Ramsdens Cup game against his former side Arbroath after suffering an injury scare.

Chisholm was thought to have injured the cartilage in his knee last week, but a period of rest allowed him to resume training on Tuesday.

“Ross Chisholm managed all of training, but it is too early to say whether he will make Saturday or not,” said Smith. “We will just have to see whether there is a reaction.”

Smith admitted he could not wait for his side’s first real test of the new campaign against second division Arbroath.

“Everybody looks forward to the first competitive game of the season and we are no different,” he added. “We will definitely not be taking Arbroath lightly though.

“We have had them watched, and by all accounts they have a good, strong team.”
