Former St Johnstone player Danny Griffin says Steve Lomas will be a big success at McDiarmid Park if he is appointed the club’s new manager.
The 37-year-old is believed to have impressed Saints chairman Geoff Brown during an interview last Friday and is understood to be on the verge of being named as Derek McInnes’s successor.
Griffin, who spent six seasons with the Saints before leaving for Dundee United in 2000, played with Lomas for Northern Ireland so knows first-hand about his determination to succeed.
And although Lomas only has a year at non-league St Neots Town and a six-month spell in charge of West Ham’s reserves under his belt, Griffin reckons Brown could not have failed to be impressed by his former team-mate’s desire and will to win.
He said: ”I played with Steve for Northern Ireland so I know that the guy is an out-and-out winner. He played at a high level in England for huge clubs like Man City and West Ham so he has the kind of pedigree St Johnstone are looking for.
”He was a big character in the dressing-room for the international side and was someone who would drive the rest of the team on. He was also someone who wanted to play good football with the ball on the deck.
”Obviously he will be new to Scottish football but he has a wealth of experience from his playing career so will have plenty of contacts.
”The biggest thing I can say about him is that his will to win is immense so he will throw everything into being a success for St Johnstone.”
