St Johnstone have failed in a bid to get their postponed match against Aberdeen rescheduled for this Saturday.

The weekend is a blank one for the SPL as Scotland are playing a friendly in Cyprus on Friday night.

Saints, who don’t have any of their first team absent on international duty, approached the Dons to see if they would be willing to play the fixture on Saturday afternoon.

The idea was a non-starter for Aberdeen boss Craig Brown, however, as he has three men away representing their countries. Brown said the swift rearrangement of the match was ”not a possibility.”

A Saints statement read: ”Although St Johnstone were very keen to use the fixture-free weekend to play the game which fell victim to the fog last night, Aberdeen FC have exercised their right not to play the game as they have four players away on international duty three of whom would potentially have been involved in the SPL fixture.

”Josh Magennis and Peter Pawlett are on under-21 duty for Northern Ireland and Scotland respectively while Mohammed Chalali is on Algerian Under-23 Olympic call. Ryan Jack is also on international duty but he would be suspended for the fixture.

”The two clubs and the SPL will therefore continue dialogue with regards to when the fixture will be played.”

SPL chief executive Neil Doncaster commented: ”We’d like it played as soon as possible because we know what the issues were last year and the year before in terms of fixture congestion. The last thing you need is fixtures piling up at this stage of the season.”
