Old Firm off the guest list for SPL clubs’ secret meeting
ByNews reporter
The drama that is Scottish football took another twist when it emerged the 10 non-Old Firm clubs in the SPL are to hold talks at a secret location next week.
The discussions, which will proceed without representation from either Celtic or Rangers, will be extensive and the impact on the top flight could be huge.
The people who run Dundee United, St Johnstone, Dunfermline, Aberdeen, Hearts, Hibs, Inverness Caley Thistle, Motherwell, Kilmarnock and St Mirren will have on the agenda the crisis at Ibrox and how best to deal with it from their perspective.
The number one topic on the agenda is likely to be the possibility of changing the SPL’s voting structure.
As things stand, some votes require an 11-1 majority to be carried, meaning the Old Firm effectively have a veto.
It is understood there is a feeling among the 10 that Rangers’ current predicament and the real prospect of their having to reapply for SPL membership should they be liquidated gives the non-Old Firm teams an opportunity to, as they see it, redress the balance and bring about a fairer system of operating as a league.
