Veteran defender Callum Davidson maintains Saints can conjure up a memorable Europa League comeback on Thursday.
The 36-year-old, who experienced European heartache with Leicester when the English side failed to overturn a first-leg loss, says he is determined to give it a ”real go” in Thursday’s tie against Eskisehirspor, with Saints trailing 2-0.
”At this stage of my career I am determined to enjoy games like these,” he said. ”When I came back to Saints after all the years down south I certainly didn’t expect to be competing in Europe. That was the last thing on my mind.
”I enjoyed the occasion over in Turkey and it will be the same again on Thursday. We know this is a tough task ahead of us but I think we have to go for it at some stage.
”There is no real option. I’m not saying we throw caution to the wind but we have to give it our best shot. If we can get the first goal that could give the game a different slant.
”It’s important we get the first one and try to stamp ourselves on the opposition. We want to dictate a bit more on our home soil, like we did in the last 20 minutes over there.”
Davidson was impressed with the Turks’ possession-based style in the first leg but hopes the Perth men can unsettle them in the return.
”They played their own style and they were very patient,” he added. ”They kept moving it and like Spain in the Euros if it meant looking back to square one to build again they were happy to do that.
”Their fans are accustomed to it, accept what they are trying to do and the climate probably dictates their style. But they can’t play the way we do in Scotland going hell for leather for 90 minutes.
“We have to go out and play our game this week, and see if they can handle it.
“The biggest target going over there was not to see the tie slipping out of sight. We showed late in the game we could rattle them so let’s see how they cope with our style in Perth.”
