Raith Rovers striker Brian Graham heaped praise on team-mate Jason Thomson for his role in the goal that sealed victory over Hamilton in the opening league game.
Rovers were clinging on to a 1-0 lead with four minutes left when right-back Thomson won the ball and set off on a lung-bursting run that took him from his own half all the way into the Accies box, before squaring the ball for Graham to score the killer second.
Graham’s double his opener came from the penalty spot in the 62nd minute took his tally to five goals in three games and earned him the sponsor’s man of the match award, but Thomson’s run stole the show.
“It was an unbelievable run from Jason,” Graham said. “I don’t think Usain Bolt could have done it any better.
“He put it on a plate for me and I’ve stuck it in the net. It’s good to score goals, but it’s not just about me, it’s about my team-mates.
“We dug in because the first half wasn’t particularly great, but we came out in the second half, scored the goals and got the three points we wanted.
“It’s a good start, so hopefully we can kick on for the rest of the campaign.”
The Sell Out Saturday campaign drew a crowd of 1,868 to Stark’s Park for the league opener, but there was little for the fans to cheer in a drab opening 45.
Raith’s best chance arrived in the 35th minute, but Allan Walker was unable to direct his 18-yard volley on target.
The home side needed David McGurn to be at his best four minutes before half-time when he denied Hamilton’s Stephen Hendrie with a superb one-handed save.
Rovers upped the pace after the break and the breakthrough arrived on 62 minutes when Accies defender Martin Canning was penalised for a push on Graham in the box.
The Raith striker took the spot kick himself and found the bottom corner to score Rovers’ first league goal of the new season.
Pat Clarke missed a glorious chance to put Rovers 2-0 up when he volleyed over after Grant Anderson picked him out.
Hamilton put the Rovers defence under pressure in the closing stages until Thomson’s brilliant solo run in the 86th minute set up Graham for a tap-in.
Despite a below-par first half, Raith manager Grant Murray said: “When the game’s 0-0 you’ve got to be confident, whether the other team’s caused you problems or not.
“You need to have belief in your own team and I definitely had that. The guys got their first clean sheet and that’s magnificent for the whole team. Keep clean sheets and you’ve got a chance of winning.”
