Dundee boss Barry Smith has had talks with former Aberdeen and Dunfermline midfielder Gary Dempsey about joining the Dark Blues as a trialist.
The 30-year-old had been playing with Bray Wanderers in his Irish homeland but is now on the look-out for a club in this country.
With Dundee currently operating under a transfer embargo, Smith has been speaking to various free agents in a bid to bolster his squad numbers.
Former St Mirren striker Tom Brighton has played two matches recently, while ex-Morton defender Stewart Greacen joined the club this week.
Players can be named as a trialist three times, and this is something Smith intends to continue taking advantage of.
“I have spoken to Gary Dempsey’s agent and said that if he wants to come here, then I would be happy with that,” said Smith.
“He’s been to a few clubs since leaving Scotland and was in Ireland until their season finished there.Shop window”I think he’s looking to get back to the UK, so it would be a chance for him to put himself in the shop window.
“The situation is that if these guys can get anything else then go for it, but if they want a game and a chance to let someone look at them, then we will provide a platform.
“I wouldn’t ask any of them to hang on, but like with Tam Brighton and Stewart Greacen, it’s a chance to put yourself in the shop window.”
Meanwhile, defender Greacen believes turning out for Dundee will help him find a new club.
“I know Barry from playing at Morton and he asked if I wanted to come in for a bit of training,” he said. “I am looking for a new club but have been training on my own in the gym, which is not nearly as good as proper training.
“The lads have been very welcoming to me and I have been impressed by the togetherness they have.
“It’s strange being on trial at a club where you know they can’t sign you, but it’s a chance to help Barry out while it also suits me.
“I am a free agent so hopefully people out there know I am looking for something and if I get a game or two, they will be able to take a look at me.”
