A fast expanding group of Dundee United players has discovered the goalscoring touch in recent weeks, and Scott Robertson is determined to join the club.
It’s no longer the case that if you stop David Goodwillie you stop United, with five different players finding the net in their last two games to see off Hibs and Hamilton.
It’s a scenario that has pleased the in-form midfielder, but he doesn’t want to be left the odd man out.
He said, “The manager told us that we needed to start getting goals from other players rather than just Goodie. He’s not scored since the Motherwell match and we’ve had four league games in that time.
“Jon Daly’s got a couple while Craig (Conway), Prince (Buaben), Davie Robertson, Johnny (Russell), Garry (Kenneth) and even Dicker (Paul Dixon) have all got one basically, just about everybody apart from me.
“When Dicker’s getting one before me that’s telling me something. I think I’m one of the few at the club who haven’t scored this season, so I definitely want to put that right sooner rather than later.
“I’ve been getting more chances recently, which is encouraging, and now I want to start putting some away.”
Team-mate Conway was in Ireland on international duty this week, but Robertson himself an international is content to build up his form at Tannadice before he will feel he is ready for further Scotland recognition.
He said, “It was great for Craig to get called up again. He deserved it after scoring and having a few assists. He’s been a big player for us since coming back from injury.
“I look on the Scotland squad as a bonus. That was how I treated being selected for the Sweden trip at the start of the season.Form”I haven’t played that much or that well since then, but I feel my form has picked up in recent games and hopefully I can get even better as the season goes on.”
It’s been a while since United faced a top-three club, and Robertson admitted Sunday’s clash with Celtic will give them an indication of just how much they have improved.
He stated, “We’ve had a couple of good wins in our last two matches, but this will be the big test for us. Everyone could see how good Celtic were in the Old Firm match on Sunday.
“They were away from home and down to 10 men but they still dominated the game. They’ve clearly got a lot of confidence at the moment and will be expecting to come here and win, but we’re at home and we’ll try to be as positive as we can.
“We managed to get a point at Celtic Park the last time we played them, so there’s no reason why we can’t get something from a match at Tannadice.”
The clubs’ first meeting will forever be remembered as the game that led to the resignation of referee Dougie MacDonald.
“I don’t understand what the big deal was,” Robertson said. “The penalty was overturned rightly in my opinion and they got their late winner, so that should have been the end of it. It didn’t affect the result so why such a big furore?
“Sadly Dougie’s ended up resigning over it. It was blown out of proportion. The media jumped on it.
“If it had been Dundee United versus Kilmarnock it wouldn’t have been such a big deal, but it was because Celtic people were calling for his head. That seems to be the way the media take it with Rangers and Celtic.
“I’m sure it will get mentioned again this week, but it’s in the past. The main thing I’m hoping doesn’t happen again is that Celtic win.”
