Veteran goalkeeper Alan Main and former Celtic defender Gary Irvine top a list of players released this week by St Johnstone boss Derek McInnes.
Midfielder Paul Sheerin had already been told his six-year stint at McDiarmid Park was over and he is to be followed through the exit door by Main, Irvine, former Dundee winger Gavin Swankie and ex-Dundee United keeper Euan McLean, who has been on loan at Forfar.
“Alan and Paul have been great servants to the football club over many years and both are still capable of doing a job elsewhere,” said McInnes.
“Alan is rightly enjoying a testimonial and he will get a chance to say a proper goodbye to the fans when that is firmed up.”
Irvine found himself in demand 12 months ago when Saints had to fight off competition from the Coca Cola Championship to retain his services.
But after undergoing summer ankle surgery he lost his place in the side to Dave Mackay.
Despite that, McInnes revealed he had been reluctant to release the right-back, who has already been linked with Aberdeen and Dundee.
“I have no doubt whatsoever that Gary will go on and do well elsewhere,” he said. “He played a vital part in our promotion season and has been a key member of our squad since coming from Celtic.
“But he wants to be playing week in week out and he will kick on again.”
Irvine commented, “It is disappointing but I have to move on. It’s amazing how much things have changed in a year. But the timing of the injury was unfortunate and Dave has had a brilliant season.”
Saints have also decided against offering former Leeds starlet Josh Falkingham a deal.
