Dundee FC boss determined his men won’t switch off against Ross County

Dundee boss Barry Smith has expressed sympathy for Ross County after their midweek game against Queen of the South was abandoned with the relegation-threatened Staggies leading 2-0 but says there will be no loss of focus when he takes his own side up to Dingwall on Saturday.

Smith was running the rule over County at Palmerston on Tuesday when an electrical problem caused floodlight failure. This was the second time the game had been abandoned because of the same problem and Smith is expecting the Staggies to attempt to take out their frustration on Dundee.

However, the Dens Park gaffer is just as determined to pick up a victory that would ensure their first division survival.

“I was at the game on Tuesday night and I was also at the other one which was abandoned earlier in the season,” he said. “I have sympathy for Ross County because that’s twice they have taken the journey there only to go away and have to do it again.

“They were playing well and had a two-goal lead, so their players will understandably be frustrated. I am sure Jimmy Calderwood will use that to fire them up on Saturday, but our lads will be up for it as well.

“We know what we have to do. It’s in our own hands between now and the end of the season. County are playing well at the moment and so are we, so I would expect it to be a cracker of a game.”

Smith has a full squad to choose from apart from long-term injury victim Sean Higgins.

* Entry to Dundee’s last home game of the season, against Partick Thistle next weekend, has been reduced to £5, thanks to a donation from the club’s shirt sponsors Kilmac Energy.

Administrator Bryan Jackson said, “These last few months have seen extraordinary efforts made by the fans, the people and the businesses of Dundee to save their club. To recognise this, we felt that the final home match should be a celebration both of the survival of the club and to look to its future, hopefully remaining in the first division.

“This is intended to be a ‘thank you’ to everyone for their efforts since last October, and because of the generous donation of Kilmac Energy it will not cost the club money.”
