Dundee United chairman Stephen Thompson would vote ‘no’ against 10-team SPL

A Dundee United board meeting has firmed up the club’s stance against a 10-team SPL.

Tannadice chairman Stephen Thompson revealed that if the controversial proposal goes to the vote at the next gathering of the country’s top-flight clubs, he will cast his as a “no.”

Earlier this month it emerged that a vote should take place next month but it seems doomed to failure.

SPL chief executive Neil Doncaster’s plans would need all 11 other clubs to support them in the wake of the Tangerines’ announcement.

Thompson said, “We had a board meeting today and as far as we’re concerned we’re unconvinced that this is the way forward for Scottish football.

“There are a lot of good things in the proposals but we don’t believe that a top league of 10 is the way forward.”Break for PernisMeanwhile, United boss Peter Houston will hand keeper Dusan Pernis an extended summer break.

The Slovakian faced having a mere two weeks’ rest because of his national team’s match with Andorra on June 5 and the new early start to the SPL.

Pernis will return to former club MFK Dubnica at the end of the season for a fortnight’s training before joining up with his international colleagues.

But with Scottish football having such a short summer break the 26-year-old whose wife is expecting their second child this summer will be granted permission to remain in his homeland while the rest of his team-mates return for pre-season.

Houston, who did the same last season after Pernis was involved in the World Cup, said, “With Dusan having the international game in June and the SPL start being brought forward, his summer would be far too short, so I’ll be letting him have an extra break.

“It’s important to get a proper rest in the close season so we’ll make sure he gets enough time to do that. He has a baby due to be born in a few weeks as well, so it will give him the opportunity to go back to Slovakia with his family.

“The goalkeepers do a different pre-season routine to the rest of the players anyway so he won’t miss any work.”

With Slovak number one Jan Mucha suspended for the Andorra game Pernis is hoping to be given the nod as his replacement.
