The representative acting on behalf of Raith Rovers’ John Baird has set the record straight over reports that the striker has demanded a move away from Stark’s Park.
Ricky Gillies, of Pro-Legal Sports Management, admits Baird is like every other ambitious player he simply wants to compete at the highest level he can.
However, he insists the prolific striker is enjoying his time at the club, is happy to see out the remaining year of his contract and would like to play in the SPL with Raith.
“John has just had a good season scoring a lot of goals and was honoured to win the First Division Player of the Year award,” said Gillies.
“So, it was inevitable that there was going to be interest from clubs in the SPL, just like there was in his former strike partner Gregory Tade.”
He added, “I actually played with John when he was at St Mirren and I know he is a true professional.
“He has proved himself at every level outwith the SPL and if the opportunity arose for him to play there, I am sure he would do well.”‘Fully committed’Gillies said, “Some comments attributed to John at the end of the last campaign may have been taken out of context every player wants to test themselves at the highest level, it does not mean they are intent on leaving their present club.
“If the call comes from the SPL then he would deserve it but I would stress he has a year left on his contract at Raith and he is fully committed to the club.
“Most teams outwith the Old Firm cannot afford to pay for players it is the nature of the beast at the moment so John will be busting his gut to do his best again for Raith.”
He added, “He has nothing but respect for the Rovers manager John McGlynn and the fans at the club.
“John (Baird) is due back from holiday soon and he intends to work really hard in pre-season.
“He hopes he can help the club try to emulate what they achieved last term and to do even better by finishing first.”
