Cardiff City are edging closer to meeting Dundee United’s asking price of £2 million for star striker David Goodwillie.
Blackpool have also entered the race to land the Scotland international, with Tannadice chairman Stephen Thompson understood to have had an amiable chat with the Seasiders’ supremo Karl Oyston at the weekend.
Despite those discussions being positive, it is believed that Cardiff are the leading contenders to snap up Goodwillie United’s leading scorer last season with 18 goals and take him down to the Championship.
They have a substantial transfer kitty and are likely to push their next offer towards United’s ball-park valuation figure.
Manager Peter Houston is aware of the serious interest from Cardiff and Blackpool but said there is still some way to go before a transfer is completed.
He said, “Nothing has really changed as regards David’s situation other than the chairman has been speaking to a couple of clubs.
“However, no agreement has been reached with anyone at the moment and he remains here with us.”‘If I were him I would go’If he does go to the Welsh club, then it would be an ideal place for him, according to United teammate Willo Flood, who has played for the Bluebirds.
“Fingers crossed Goodie stays with us but I think it’s only a matter of time until a fee is agreed and he is on his way,” said Flood.
“If I were him I would go to the English leagues because at least he would have a life outside of football.
“He would be able to go and enjoy his life. He just wants to play football and enjoy his game.”
He added, “I’m sure if he has his way he will go south.
“If Cardiff agree a fee for him he should seriously consider it. They are a great club with good staff and they will look after him.
“They are a Premiership club in waiting.”
