Brechin City bounced back to winning ways as goals from Robert Thomson and Kyle McAusland restored smiles to the faces of those at the Glebe Park club after a comfortable win against Ayr at Somerset Park.
City went into this clash against promotion-chasing United after back-to-back defeats and boss Ray McKinnon was glad to enjoy a much happier day at work, saying: “It was a good win after a difficult few weeks.
“I am pleased with the win and the clean sheet.
“The lads did well especially in the first half, keeping them under control for large periods which we completely dominated.
“They put us under a fair amount of pressure in the second half as they were pushing for the goals but we kept our shape and stayed firm to keep them out which pleased me.”
There were rare moments when Brechin threatened to drop a point but they were in control for most of the game after taking the lead early in the first half and quickly adding to it.
The visitors got off the mark thanks to some calamitous defending from Martyn Campbell, whose ill-advised pass-back to keeper David Hutton was seized on by Thomson who expertly chipped Hutton from 10 yards.
Kyle McAusland doubled City’s lead 20 minutes later when he received Andy Jackson’s pass on the edge of the box before cutting inside and striking a low shot into the far corner.
