Cowdenbeath v Hearts: Cowden opt for plan of attack

Cowdenbeaths Callum Gallagher drills home his sides equaliser when his team played Hearts at Tynecastle in September. The game finished in a 5-1 win for the home side.

Cowdenbeath will look to do what no side has done in the Championship so far this season and that is defeat leaders Hearts and they will aim to do it by attacking Robbie Neilson’s side.

The Blue Brazil gave their season a huge boost at the weekend by winning 2-1 at Queen of the South and manager Jimmy Nicholl reckons that the forward-thinking approach that he used against the Doonhamers will give his side a chance against the Tynecastle men.

Nicholl said: “We changed things around at Palmerston as we looked to give Sean Higgins a lot more support up front than we had been in recent games.

“He is a really willing worker but we normally have to take him off with 15 minutes to go as he is exhausted after leading the line on his own.”

“We went with Calum Gallagher and then Craig Sutherland alongside Sean and it worked. Sean was fresh enough to grab the winning goal in injury time and everyone has taken a lift from that win.”

“Hearts are a very good side but we will look to play in their half and put them under pressure. “

The Central Park boss added: “Saturday was a massive win for us and no one expected it after what Queen of the South did to Rangers.

“No one expects us to do anything in this game either but we will give it our best shot.”

Nicholl will have to make changes to his line-up as Declan Hughes has returned to St Mirren at the end of his loan spell and Calum Gallagher looks set to miss out with the ankle injury he picked up in Dumfries.

Nicholl said: “It is disappointing to have to change things as Declan played well at the weekend and Calum produced a lovely finish for our first goal.

“However, we lost Marcus Fraser from our pool recently as he went back to Celtic but Thomas O’Brien came in and was fantastic at Queen of the South.

“Someone else will now get the opportunity to do what Thomas did.”

The long-term injured Dean Brett, Kenny Adamson and John Armstrong also miss out for the Fifers.
