Rhys Weston will barely have time to think before moving on to the next chapter of his career.
He added: ”I have obviously just come off the back of a hard season for Dundee but am buzzing at the prospect of this move, so there is no feeling of tiredness whatsoever.
”I am quite fit anyway so starting another season straight away wouldn’t bother me at all. It is a short campaign from May until the end of September and the games will come thick and fast, which I like.
”I know a few Scottish lads have gone out to Iceland in the past and enjoyed the experience. Hopefully, I can do the same because it’s a two-year deal, with the option of a third if things go well.”
Weston jumped at the chance to gain such security in these uncertain times for the game in Scotland.
”I couldn’t turn down that kind of contract, especially at this stage in my career,” he said. ”The money is not life-changing but it’s life-sustaining in that it gives me a good basis for the near future.
”I was shocked the way it came about. It happened through an intermediary who approached me a couple of weeks ago and obviously I would have been mad not to take it.”
Weston would have loved to have helped Dundee win promotion to the SPL but hopes to see Smith’s side’s lift the First Division title next season.
He said: ”Dundee are a great club and they have been through a lot in the past couple of years with administration. However, they have come through the other side which tells you all about their character.
”I will be slightly sad to leave because there is a lot of great people there, but in life you move on wherever the football takes you.
”I really do hope they can get back to the SPL next season as that is where a club that size should be. I will always look out for their results but now I have to get myself ready to head to Iceland for this new adventure.”
The central defender, who has just left Dundee after being told his contract wouldn’t be getting renewed, has already agreed a two-year deal with KR Reykjavik in Iceland.
Weston would have been suspended for the Dark Blues’ final match of the season against Livingston on Saturday anyway. But instead of kicking his heels in the Dens stand, he is now in line to make a quick-fire debut for the Icelandic champions when they start their new season against Stjarnan Gardabae on Sunday.
One of six players told this week by Dundee boss Barry Smith that they wouldn’t be in his plans, Weston has wasted little time in getting himself fixed up and he hopes to hit the ground running in Reykjavik.
”It is going to be the fastest turnaround you could possibly imagine if I am to play on Sunday, but I would have no qualms about going straight in if that is what the manager wants,” said Weston.
”Their season starts this weekend and obviously the manager will want me to get out there as quickly as possible provided everything is all right.
”There has barely been time to sit down and think about things as it all happened at such speed. It is going to be hectic to say the least but that is football for you these days, and you have to be prepared for anything.
”Living the life of a football player means you have to be ready to travel to different places at such short notice and that is something I have become used to in recent years. I’m not fazed by that.
”I don’t know a lot about Icelandic football but it is a new chapter in my career so I am really excited about it. When you join any new club, you just want to start playing right away and that’s the case here.
”Dundee have been great to me but it’s time to move on and start afresh.”
Weston (31) insists he will be fit enough to go straight into a new season despite a long campaign for the Dark Blues.
