Raith Rovers v Forfar: Cuthbert excited over new season after false start

Kevin Cuthbert.
Kevin Cuthbert.

Kevin Cuthbert admits his career peaked as he helped Hamilton to promotion last term but the new Raith Rovers keeper believes a memorable cup run would be the perfect way to ensure another unforgettable campaign.

Cuthbert will make his belated debut for Rovers as they host Forfar in the League Cup following his summer switch from New Douglas Park.

Although his penalty heroics against Hibs in May, earning Accies promotion by saving spot-kicks from Kevin Thomson and Jason Cummings, are still fresh in the mind, the 31-year-old departed soon after.

However, far from being disheartened by the fact he did not realise his ambition of playing in the top flight, Cuthbert is visibly excited by the challenge ahead.

He said: “If you are not excited by a new challenge then it is probably time to hang up the boots. The most important aspect of longevity in football is making sure you keep testing yourself andenjoying it.

“I want to do as well as I possibly can for Raith Rovers and hopefully carry on from a memorable season last year.

“Achieving promotion last season was something I have aimed for during the majority of my career and I can proudly say I managed it. I will never forget that day at Easter Road, it is the highest point of my career.

“But football is not about standing still, and I am really enthusiastic about coming here to try and improve another team and hopefully create some new memories.

“A good cup run would certainly be a way to do that, although we are well aware that Forfar will be a real test.”

Cuthbert saw his Rovers debut put on hold last week due to a freak deluge at East End Park just 20 minutes before their Petrofac Training Cup tie against Dunfermline.

Referee Steven McLean had little choice but to call the game off.
