Despite the disappointment of going down 1-0 to Dumbarton in their League Cup clash at Glebe Park, Brechin City manager Ray McKinnon was fulsome in his praise for his players after the game.
“I thought that we were great throughout the match,” he said.
“I thought that the shape of the team was fantastic, the workrate was different class and we had the best chance of the opening 45 minutes when Alan Trouten hit it past the post.
“In the last quarter of an hour we had them on the rack and I thought they’d gone but unfortunately you get games like that where you deserve to take something out of it and end up with nothing.”
“On the positive side we have a good squad with excellent players, our fitness levels were fantastic as we showed, particularly in the second half, but we just couldn’t get the equaliser our play deserved.”
City had a good chance after 15 minutes when a great pass from Alan Trouten sent Robert Thomson away on the left but the big striker fired his shot into the side-netting.
City passed up an even greater opportunity just after the half-hour mark when superb play from Andy Jackson created an opportunity for Trouten but the midfielder side-footed the ball past the post with the goal at his mercy.
One had the feeling that City might just rue those missed opportunities and so it proved after 59 minutes.
A long throw-in by Scott Linton fell into the City box and midfielder Andy Graham was first to react, sticking out a leg to divert the ball past Graeme Smith.
