Brechin City began their home league campaign with a victory over Stenhousemuir a team they didn’t take any points from at all last season.
Glebe Park boss Ray McKinnon was delighted with his team’s win, although he felt the margin of victory should have been more emphatic.
“I’m pleased with the three points in our opening home game of the season but we really should have put the match to bed much earlier,” he said.
“We created a number of opportunities in the match but made the wrong decisions and seemed disinclined to shoot when we had the chances.
“This is obviously something we’ll be working on but overall I was pleased with the general performance of the team.
“We defended well, the midfield worked extremely hard as did the strikers, but we have to make sure that we tuck the opportunities away.”
The first-half was fairly scrappy with both teams unable to create much in the way of clear-cut chances, but City grabbed what proved to be the winner a couple of minutes before the break.
Skipper Craig Molloy played a quick free-kick into the path of Alan Trouten and, with the Stenny defence slow to react, he deftly lobbed keeper Greg Fleming, steering his chip into the top corner of the net.
After the break the visitors applied a lot of pressure, particularly in the closing stages.
They were awarded a penalty 11 minutes from time after Paul McLean had fouled Colin McMenamin in the box.
However, City keeper Graeme Smith brought off a superb save to tip Martin Grehan’s spot-kick round the post.
