Former St Johnstone legend and manager of three clubs in Angus, Jim Weir, has been appointed boss of Elgin City.
Weir takes charge of League Two’s basement boys after they parted company with Barry Wilson.
His first game is on Tuesday night against one of his former employers, Arbroath.
And the club nearest to Elgin in the league is another one he used to manage – Montrose.
“We had a couple of talks this week and I’m delighted to be given the chance to get back into management,” Weir said.
“I took a break from management after my last post two years ago (with Brechin City) and that’s long enough.
“The love of football has never left me and it’s great to get back in. Football is all I have known for 30 years. It is my life.
“I was even playing junior football with Luncarty and Kinnoull at the ridiculous age of 45 because I missed the dressing room banter and the adrenaline buzz you get from winning matches. I have always had this competitive streak.
“My focus was always on getting back into management but I knew I would have to bide my time because there are some big names waiting to get their chance.
You are always learning in football and obviously looking back, there were things I would do differently. That experience will stand me in good stead at Elgin.
I know what part-time football is all about at this level and I am looking forward to the challenge and working with the squad.”
The task in front of Weir and Elgin is a clear-cut one – avoid relegation.
“Obviously the priority is getting the team out of our current position,” he pointed out.
“I don’t normally go public with targets but in this case with the pyramid system in place now it is important we get away from the bottom of the table and make sure we are safe. We won’t look too far ahead. That has to be the focus and we have to build confidence among the players. I’m up for the challenge.
“It hasn’t worked out the way he wanted here but Barry Wilson is a good lad and he will get back into the game.”
Weir will have another former Saints player, Gavin Price, as his number two.
He has been managing Jeanfield Swifts and will take charge for their Scottish Cup replay this weekend before taking up his new post.
