Cowdenbeath defender Nat Wedderburn defiantly insisted that the Blue Brazil would not be involved in a play-off to escape relegation at the end of the season, despite capitulating against Livingston on Saturday to remain four points behind nearest rivals Raith Rovers.
Jimmy Nicholl’s men had enjoyed a recent surge in form thanks to victories over title chasers Hamilton and Dundee, but the lacklustre display at Almondvale highlighted the inconsistency that has plagued the Fifers this season, leaving them second from bottom in the division.
Despite their precarious position, Wedderburn vowed that play-off football would not be coming to Central Park at the end of the season.
The defender said: “There is not going to be a play-off. We are not thinking about that, we are just thinking about getting above that threshold.
“We are not thinking about play-offs. The lads are confident. There are 10 games to go and we will work on it in training and I am sure we’ll get out of the situation.”
The first half belonged to the visitors but their downfall was not converting possession into chances, with their only real effort coming from a weak Chris Kane shot from an acute angle that Darren Jamieson saved with ease.
Keaghan Jacobs forced Thomas Flynn into an acrobatic one-handed save before waltzing through the Cowden defence only to see his effort slide wide of the upright.
That warning wasn’t heeded and Slovenian striker Michal Habai swung in a cross to the back post where the umarked Jason Talbot slid in to score.
Flynn had to save at the feet of Marc McNulty after an atrocious clearance from the keeper almost gifted John McGlynn’s men their second.
