Montrose boss Stuart Garden remained upbeat about his side’s play-off hopes despite being gutted by this thrashing.
Despite a dismal defeat, the Gable Endies are only six points behind East Stirling in a play-off berth with eight games remaining.
That statistic offered the only comfort for Garden, who said: “That performance was hard to take and it’s a day we want to forget and want to bounce back from.
“Nobody turned up for us and although full credit goes to Berwick our performance was not acceptable.”
Some of the Montrose players were going to Newcastle for a night out after the game but they would have been in no mood to celebrate after being outplayed from the first to the final minute at Shielfield Park.
Darren Lavery started the demolition when he sent his 20-yard shot into the bottom left corner on six minutes. Montrose almost levelled when Bryan Deasley fired a 25-yard shot narrowly wide of the Berwick goal on 14 minutes.
On 24 minutes good wing play from Gray saw him cross from the byeline for Steven Notman to tap home. A minute later Notman turned provider with a perfect cross for Lee Currie who headed home unmarked.
Montrose missed a great chance on 37 minutes with Deasley heading straight at the keeper from Graham Webster’s cross.
Currie then made it 4-0 on 61 minutes, sending the keeper the wrong way from a penalty he won after being fouled by Ricky McIntosh.
Sub Scott Dalziel completed the rout in stoppage time when he turned in the box before shooting home from Currie’s cutback.
Delighted Berwick player/manager Colin Cameron said: “That is our best performance since I came here.”
