Montrose moved to within three points of a play-off spot with a win over their closest rivals.
The home side had the wind with them in the first half as they built up a 2-0 lead and held on for three points over East Stirling.
Montrose opened the scoring on 15 minutes.
Scott Johnston chested the ball down and David Gray fired a piledriver into the net from 30 yards.
Gray had a 30-yard free-kick saved by Grant Hay, then the keeper saved a Colin Wilson shot.
David Greenhill missed a gilt-edged chance for the visitors, then seconds from half-time, Graham Webster did brilliantly on the right. His cross was turned home by Bryan Deasley.
Greenhill cleared an Alan Campbell header off the line as Montrose tried to stretch their lead and at the other end three good chances were blazed over.
Montrose boss Stuart Garden said: “That was a battling display. It was never going to be pretty in that wind but we took advantage of the conditions in the first half, then handled things really well.
“My keeper, Stuart McKenzie, was different class and never took a backward step.
“We scored two good goals a great strike from David Gray then a great bit of skill from Webster and a good finish from Deasley.
“This was a must-win game, but we are now right back in the race for the play-offs.
“I was pleased with the reaction after the Berwick defeat and I hope that was just a blip.”
