Scotland Under-17s maintained their 100% record in the UEFA European Under-17 Championships elite stages with a 1-0 victory over Romania at Rugby Park on Saturday.
The young Scots, who again fielded Dundee striker Craig Wighton and Dundee United’s Cameron Ballantyne, had already sealed qualification for this summer’s finals in Malta after picking up maximum points in their opening two matches.
With Bosnia-Herzegovina defeating Belgium 3-0 in the group’s other match at Cappielow, Scott Wright’s early free-kick after two minutes means Scotland top the group with nine points from their three matches.
The victory for Scot Gemmill’s side also means that the team are unbeaten throughout the entire qualification process, with five wins and a draw from six matches.
Wighton caused the Romanian defence all sorts of problems as Scotland’s main focal point in attack, while Ballantyne, so impressive in defence against Belgium last Wednesday, played in the heart of the midfield and again played a starring role.
Scotland will find out their group opponents in the Championship Finals next week, with the draw taking place in Valletta, Malta, on April 9.
