Cowdenbeath v Queen of the South: Last chance for Nicholl’s men to reach safety

Cowdenbeath face Queen of the South in a must-win game for Championship survival today.

A win would see the Fifers safe provided Alloa do not match it at Falkirk.

Boss Jimmy Nicholl has settled for being happy with his team still fighting relegation at this stage as opposed to remaining upset with them for heavy defeats from Falkirk and Dundee at the beginning of April that have made their job harder.

Nicholl said: “Matters are not in our hands as if Alloa win at Falkirk then it does not matter what we do.

“However, people had us dead and buried a few weeks ago after we lost 5-0 to Falkirk and the 4-0 to Dundee the following week.

“The players have battled back to give us a chance on the last day and that is all we could have asked for at that time.

“They have done so well but I am now regretting even more losing those nine goals as that makes our task all the harder as goal difference is worth a point to Alloa.

“We have to win, we cannot draw.”

Nicholl added: “Everyone rallied to the cause against Livingston and then Raith and winning those two games have given us a chance. If we pull it off then fantastic.

“Queen of the South are a good side who will be determined not to let a good season up with a defeat so we really have to play well.”

The Blue Brazil miss only Sammy Stewart who has an ankle injury.

The Doonhamers have Mark Durnan and Derek Lyle banned and Stephen McKenna ruled out.
