Airdrieonians v Arbroath: Sheerin says Lichties remain ‘upbeat’ despite staring at relegation

Paul Sheerin.
Paul Sheerin.

Arbroath know the only thing they can do to avoid automatic relegation today is get a positive result at Airdrie and hope East Fife go down at Ayr United.

A point separates the sides at the moment and, even though the Red Lichties could survive with a draw due to a better goal difference, player-manager Paul Sheerin is concentrating only on a win.

Sheerin said: “I have been saying for a few weeks that I wanted to take things to the final day and we have after a time where we looked doomed.

“It is disappointing not to have matters in our own hands after losing to Dunfermline last week but we will go out and look for the win.”

Despite their position Sheerin reckons that his squad are in good heart as he explained: “We have been playing well for a number of weeks now and training has been positive and upbeat so it is far from a despondent camp.

“We know that we have to go out and win and see what happens elsewhere.

“It is important that we do that first part as if we do not win or even get a draw then there is no point in knowing other results. Airdrie have done brilliantly under Gary Bollan but we have to find a way to beat them.”

Only Connor Birse is missing from Sheerin’s squad due to a long-term knee injury.

Airdrie boss Gary Bollan is in no mood to offer Arbroath any encouragement.

He said: “We worked hard at creating a strong and winning mentality in the players. Now that we have it we are not going to say that things can slow down.

“We want to make Airdrie a place to be feared and the more games we win the more it will be feared.”

The Diamonds miss only Grant Drummond and John Boyle who have had knee surgery.
