Dunfermline 2 Spartans 2 (3-2 on pens): Pars youngsters hold nerve for penalty win

Lewis Spence was in action for Dunfermline.

Dunfermline won the Ronnie Swan Challenge Tournament but had to endure a nervy penalty shoot-out to do so.

It was a young side who returned to Ainslie Park after the previous day’s mix of strength and experience had seen the Pars through with a 1-0 win over Livingston, courtesy of a Ryan Thomson free-kick.

Spartans had booked their place in the final with a 4-1 win over a young Falkirk side.

For Sunday’s game, the first team squad was only represented by Ryan Williamson and Lewis Spence.

Andrew Walker, a 20-year-old trialist, lined up alongside Declan O’Kane in the centre of defence, while Spartans fielded former Pars youth Sean Muhsin and up front was Errol Douglas, who played last season at Stenhousemuir.

Dunfermline were to lose a goal in the final minute of the half.

Spartans’ prolific goalscorer Donal Henretty was allowed a free header when the ball came across from a corner on the right.

Dunfermline started the second half purposely and on 49 minutes Ross Drummond stuck in a chance from an acute angle on the left to bring the teams back on level terms.

The game was to have a dramatic finale, however. Firstly, Gavin McMillan made it 2-1 with two minutes remaining.

However, keeper Cammy Gill was penalised for holding on to the ball for too long. From the resultant set-piece, Craig Stevenson hit the net with a 91st-minute equaliser.

In the penalty shootout, Graham’s first penalty was saved but Cammy Gill saved from Craig Stevenson.

Michael Bruce’s miss for Spartans looked to have handed the advantage to the Pars but Declan O’Kane’s potential winner was saved. However, Gill was to come to the rescue when he saved Sivewright’s shot for the Pars to win the shootout 3-2.
