Gary Naysmith admitted that individual errors had cost his East Fife side an unlikely point at Bayview on Saturday.
The Methil men had come back from being 2-0 down at the break to haul themselves level at 2-2.
But, with time ticking down, the Fifers’ defence switched off and David Cook slammed home a late winner.
East Fife had an early chance to break the deadlock when Caolon McAleer’s cross was almost turned in by Alan Cook.
But from there the visitors dominated the opening half.
Paul Currie gave Berwick a deserved lead before it was doubled after Allan Walker headed past his own keeper.
East Fife came out a different side in the second 45 and quickly pulled one back when Cook slammed home a penalty after Nathan Austin was fouled inside the Berwick penalty box.
East Fife’s remarkable comeback was completed when Steven Campbell used the swirling win inside Bayview to fire home a stunning free-kick.
With Berwick keeper Willie Bald off his line, Campbell used his initiative to fire a quick free-kick at goal which looped over Bald and into the back of the net.
Ewan Moyes passed up a great chance to seal the win with a header but couldn’t find the target.
But the hard work was undone when Gold popped up inside the East Fife box to fire home a late clincher.
For Naysmith, the defeat was hard to take.
He said: “The penalty seemed to galvanise us a bit and then Stevie Campbell has spotted the keeper off his line and you won’t see a better goal than that all season.
“That’s what we should be talking about at the end of the game. At 2-2 there was only one team going to win it.
“But then somebody wasn’t doing their job meaning that someone else had to and that’s left a wee gap and they score. It was a terrible goal to lose.
“I said after Stranraer that the goal we lost was terrible and the goal at Elgin was terrible.”
