Brechin v Peterhead: McKinnon targets cup run as Blue Toon visit the Glebe

Brechin boss Ray McKinnon has pinpointed Mark Millar as the man his side will have to watch tonight in the Petrofac Training Cup tie against Peterhead.

City marked their first home league game of the campaign on Saturday by taking all three points against a Stenhousemuir side that had beaten them on four occasions last season.

An Alan Trouten goal was enough to secure victory over the Warriors with home keeper Graeme Smith saving a penalty with 11 minutes remaining.

McKinnon is determined to build on that win against Peterhead.

However, he cautioned that Jim McInally’s side will be a difficult proposition, especially after adding former Celtic, Falkirk and Dundee United midfielder Millar to their squad.

The 26-year-old played for the Blue Toon in Saturday’s win over Airdrie as a trialist and has now signed a short-term deal with Peterhead.

McKinnon said: “It was a good performance on Saturday and I was delighted to get the win. They had beaten us four times last season, so it was good to redress the balance.

“We played well and I felt we should have put the game to bed before they won their penalty. Thankfully, our keeper made a good save.

“Overall, we have made a decent start to the season and we will be looking to keep that going against Peterhead.

“They have also made a good start after winning promotion last season. They seem to have kept that winning mentality going and they have made a really good signing in Mark Millar.

“Jim has put a good squad together so it will be a tough game but this is a competition we are looking to do well in.”

McKinnon has a full squad to choose from for the match.

Meanwhile, McInally is finding it hard to believe that he will have Millar in his side at Glebe Park.

The manager said: “I could not get Mark signed up quickly enough when I heard he was still available.

“I have known him since I was his coach at Celtic’s Youth Academy and I am sure that he will star for us.

“He should not be playing at our level but he has the opportunity to put that right over the next few months by showing people what he can do here.”
